Recycling Services Inc. working toward Positive Reinforcement

Recycling Services Inc. (365 Elm St in North Coventry Township) is working toward Positive Reinforcement and Community Building. The idea came about when my daughter, who was fifteen at the time and living in another state, called me and said she had been given a ticket by a local police officer. She was laughing as she said this so I knew it was nothing serious. She further explained that she had been stopped by the local police and given a ticket for a free ice cream cone because she was wearing a bicycle helmet. Thus began the idea that if more kids made their first contact with the local police in a fun way, and if the prizes could be connected to supporting local business, this would be a great step toward building the community. The idea has begun with the North Coventry Police and so far prizes have been donated by Friday’s Restaurant and Meadowbrook Dairy Bar. These prizes can be used in many ways, such as the above example of a child riding with a bicycle helmet getting a prize of a free ice cream cone. A routine traffic stop that finds a child properly secured in a car seat could result in a prize of a free dinner for the parents. In a town like Pottstown, imagine returning to your car from shopping a finding a “ticket” on your windshield for a free prize because you had put money in the parking meter!
Another side of Positive Reinforcement deals with the safety of our local police officers. In a conversation with a participant in a class held in Philadelphia, he said that part of the class dealt with surviving on the streets, “you know, not having a brick dropped on your head when responding to a call”. My reply was that if you build a strong foundation with the local kids, which are a long term investment, there will be no loose bricks to be thrown.
What we are hoping for in working toward Community Building and Positive Reinforcement are prizes donated from local businesses. Any business wishing to participate can contact me to pick up the prizes and they will be distributed to the police department in that businesses jurisdiction.
From Mark Flanders, Pottstown Chief of Police, “Great idea - This is something that Rita's Water Ice has been doing for a couple of years in other communities (Pottstown in '05)” |

This project will
consist of purchasing a motor home and converting it to use renewable
resources. The project will include powering the vehicle with vegetable
oil, an on board composting toilet and food composter, high mileage tires
which do not wear out, solar electric and solar water heating, a fold up
wind generator, a window greenhouse, internal and external air cleaning,
incoming and outgoing water cleaning, an on board wringer washing machine
with sound wave cleaning, thermocouple refrigeration, underbody
stream-lining , a fold out solar oven, internal hydrogen fueled stove,
water saving features and heat recovery in the drains. Also the project
would use a Volkswagen Diesel Rabbit as a tow behind
vehicle. The Vixen Motor Home appears to be the best choice because of its sleek design. It is equipped with a diesel engine which will easily adapt to cleaner burning vegetable oil, also a manual transmission for better mileage. All of the projects involved in creating this vehicle are learning tools; some will be adapted for home use and will work much better in fixed applications. Others, like the in home electronic composter and high mileage "blue" tires are to create interest in such items and to help make them available in this country, where test marketing has yet to be done. |

The total cost of the project is expected to be $41, 850, of which $4400 has already been spent. We are currently seeking sponsors to help cover the cost of this project. For a donation of $500, or equivalent in parts or labor, you can have a sponsor name on the vehicle.
